3. Training

Capacity building is a core pillar of the project, aimed at strengthening the skills, systems, and institutions needed to implement effective sentinel surveillance in Palestine. Through a combination of training workshops, Train-the-Trainer programmes, and field-based coaching, the project enhances competencies in surveillance methods, standardized data collection, reporting, and digital tools. It also reinforces capacities in mental health monitoring and ecosystem-health assessment, ensuring a holistic approach that integrates human, environmental, and community dimensions. By empowering local professionals, academic institutions, and health facilities, the initiative builds long-term sustainability and supports evidence-based decision-making for public health and environmental resilience.

3.1 Training of Trainers (TOT)

The TOT has the following objectives:

Training of Trainers (TOT)
  • Strengthening skills in standardized data collection.
  • Building national trainers capable of training local teams.
  • Introducing co-creation approaches with communities and stakeholders.
  • Improving data quality, ethical practices, and reporting.

3.2. Training of trainees

We organize our training program into a series of practical modules that equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed for high-quality sentinel surveillance. These modules cover core areas such as data collection tools and protocols, digital reporting systems, mental health screening, and ecosystem-based approaches to occupational health. Each module combines theoretical foundations with hands-on exercises to ensure strong field applicability. The program involves a diverse group of stakeholders, including academic experts, healthcare professionals, community representatives, environmental specialists, and decision-makers, who contribute to co-creation processes, contextual adaptation, and the validation of tools and methods. This teamwork with different groups makes sure the training meets local needs and follows international standards, helping everyone feel involved, ensuring long-term success, and allowing for effective use in various organizations.

This South initiative project is a Belgian-Palestinian collaboration funded by the VLIR-UOS (2025–2027).

The project comes in response to the severe weakening of the capacities of academic and health institutions following the conflict in Palestine, limiting resources for data collection, evidence-based interventions, and personnel training.
